An armed man attempted to breach security at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on April 25, 2026, forcing the evacuation of President Donald Trump and other senior officials from the Washington Hilton.
Hundreds of journalists, government officials and guests were gathered for one of Washington’s most prominent annual events when the incident unfolded near a security checkpoint. Gunfire erupted as law enforcement confronted the suspect before he could reach the main ballroom where the president was attending.
What Happened
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, allegedly attempted to force his way through a security screening area while carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun and several knives, according to investigators. Secret Service and law enforcement officers engaged the suspect during the confrontation, and shots were fired.
A U.S. Secret Service agent was struck during the exchange but survived after a bullet was stopped by protective body armor, officials said. The agent was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the suspect was also injured before being taken into custody.
The Response
Secret Service personnel immediately escorted President Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other protected officials away from the venue as police secured the hotel and searched for additional threats. Guests were instructed to evacuate or shelter in place while authorities determined whether the suspect had acted alone.
Federal authorities have charged Allen with attempting to assassinate the president, along with multiple federal firearms and assault offenses. No fatalities were reported from the incident.
Security Questions
The breach has prompted discussion about security at high-profile political events, with some questioning how an armed suspect reached a checkpoint at a venue attended by the nation’s top leaders. Investigators are examining Allen’s background, writings and recent activities to determine a possible motive.
President Trump praised the Secret Service and law enforcement officers for their swift response, saying their actions helped prevent a potentially more serious attack. The investigation remains ongoing as federal authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
