Rubio detailed the episode during an appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast, describing how it unfolded while administration officials returned from China. The passenger remained motionless in an Air Force One conference room despite significant activity and noise surrounding them.
What Happened
Officials debated for approximately 90 minutes whether to intervene, hesitant to potentially embarrass the individual if they were simply in deep sleep. “Because it’s embarrassing if you wake them up,” Rubio said, describing the dilemma officials faced.
The concern escalated as the passenger showed minimal response to external stimuli and displayed what Rubio characterized as an irregular breathing pattern. “But if they were dead, like what do you do? You have a dead body on the plane,” Rubio said, articulating the stakes of the situation.
Despite mounting concerns, the group did not immediately wake the passenger or summon medical personnel. “Luckily, the person was fine,” Rubio ultimately revealed.

Rubio declined to identify the passenger, generate immediate speculation across social media platforms about the individual’s identity. Unsubstantiated claims circulated online, though Rubio provided no confirmation or additional details.

The story gained additional attention given Rubio’s recent congressional testimony about a separate incident. During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing approximately one month prior, Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu questioned whether Rubio had attended meetings where President Donald Trump fell asleep.
“I’ve never seen him fall asleep. On the contrary, the guy doesn’t sleep, which is a big problem,” Rubio responded at that hearing. Lieu disputed the account and presented video footage he claimed showed Trump with his eyes closed during a Cabinet meeting.
What This Means
The Air Force One incident remains largely unexplained, with crucial details withheld from public disclosure. Rubio did not specify when the flight occurred or identify which other officials participated in the extended deliberation.
With the passenger ultimately unharmed, Rubio appeared capable of recounting the strange episode with more levity than those aboard apparently experienced during the actual event.
