A Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down an unmanned vessel carrying explosives that drifted dangerously close to an offshore gas platform in the Black Sea on Thursday.
The maritime drone was detected approximately 6:28 a.m. local time on August 20 by a commercial vessel operating near the Neptun Alpha production platform, located about 80 nautical miles east of Constanța. The unmanned craft had drifted several hundred meters from the facility, which sits in Romania’s exclusive economic zone and employs hundreds of workers.
A commercial vessel first reported the suspicious craft to authorities, triggering an immediate response from the Romanian Coast Guard. The Ministry of National Defence was notified, and officials quickly established an emergency command cell to assess the potential threat to the offshore infrastructure and personnel.
Military Response and Neutralization
Interim Defence Minister Radu Miruță said authorities determined that the situation required urgent military intervention. “After consultations with President Nicușor Dan, operational control was transferred to Romanian forces and authorization was given to neutralize the vessel,” Miruță stated.
Two Romanian Air Force F-16s were scrambled to the area. One fighter engaged the maritime drone with its onboard cannon, damaging the vessel and reducing the immediate threat, though the craft remained afloat and continued drifting.
A Romanian Coast Guard vessel carrying an explosive ordnance disposal team from the Naval Forces was dispatched to conduct the second phase of the operation. Specialists confirmed the damaged drone contained an explosive charge and carried out a controlled detonation to safely eliminate the remaining danger.
Investigation and Attribution
Video released by Romania’s Defence Ministry documented the fighter jet engagement and the subsequent disposal operation. Officials immediately began efforts to determine the drone’s origin and operational purpose.
Miruță said authorities contacted Ukraine through a recently established direct communication channel. Ukrainian officials confirmed that the vessel was not of Ukrainian origin, according to Romanian statements.
President Dan strongly condemned the incident and attributed responsibility to Russia. “Such episodes demonstrate the growing security challenges facing Romania and other NATO members along the Black Sea,” Dan said, without providing additional evidence for the attribution.

The incident marks another escalation in unmanned threats affecting NATO infrastructure in the region. Romania has reported multiple drone incidents near its Black Sea facilities over recent months.
The country has strengthened defense protocols and established direct communication channels with neighboring Ukraine to coordinate responses to airborne and maritime threats. NATO allies have increased surveillance and air defense presence in the region.
