Secretary of State Marco Rubio disclosed a bizarre incident aboard Air Force One in which senior officials spent roughly 90 minutes uncertain whether an unidentified passenger was deeply asleep or deceased.
Rubio recounted the unusual episode during an appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast, stating it occurred while administration officials were returning from China. The individual remained motionless in an Air Force One conference room despite significant activity and noise in the surrounding area.
The 90-Minute Deliberation
Officials hesitated to intervene, weighing the embarrassment of waking someone in a deep sleep against more serious concerns. “We spent about 90 minutes sort of debating should we make a move?” Rubio recalled. “Should I call the doc? Should we deal with this?”
According to Rubio, the passenger had slept through “a lot of noise” and showed no response to external stimuli. Rubio also described the person’s breathing pattern as “difficult,” which heightened worry among those monitoring the situation.
Despite these concerns, the group deliberated for approximately an hour and a half rather than immediately waking the individual or requesting medical assistance. “Luckily, the person was fine,” Rubio said, indicating the passenger eventually woke without incident.
Mystery and Social Media Speculation
Rubio declined to identify the individual, which sparked considerable online speculation and jokes. Some social media posts included unsupported suggestions about the passenger’s identity, though Rubio provided no confirmation or additional details.
The incident drew added attention given Rubio’s recent involvement in another sleep-related controversy. During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing approximately one month earlier, Democratic California Rep. Ted Lieu questioned whether Rubio had attended multiple meetings where President Donald Trump fell asleep.

The Trump Sleep Question
“I’ve never seen him fall asleep,” Rubio responded to Lieu’s inquiry. “On the contrary, the guy doesn’t sleep, which is a big problem,” he added, citing Trump’s demanding schedule.
Lieu disputed the account and referenced video footage from a Cabinet meeting that he claimed showed Trump with his eyes closed during Rubio’s remarks. “Secretary Rubio, I’m going to show you, in a moment, a video that shows you just lied to Congress,” Lieu said.
Rubio maintained his testimony that he had never personally witnessed the president fall asleep. No formal congressional action resulting from Lieu’s accusation has been reported.
The Unanswered Mystery
The central question surrounding Rubio’s Air Force One account remains unresolved. The secretary of state did not identify the passenger, specify the exact date of the flight, or name which other officials participated in the deliberation.
With the passenger ultimately waking unharmed, Rubio appeared able to reflect on the strange episode with significantly more humor than those aboard apparently experienced during the incident itself.
