Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance, on July 19, marking the first child born to a sitting U.S. vice president in more than 150 years.
Usha and the newborn are both healthy, the couple announced. The birth expands the Vance family to six members, joining older siblings Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel, who is now a big sister at age four.
The Vances had revealed in January that they were expecting a son and expressed gratitude for the medical care their family would receive. “We are looking forward to welcoming our fourth child,” the couple said at the time.
Family Celebrates New Addition
The three older Vance children were excited to meet their new brother, according to the family’s announcement. For Mirabel, the transition from youngest child to older sister represents a significant shift in her role within the household.
Following Alec’s birth, the Vances thanked medical professionals at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit for their care. The couple later shared family photographs displaying the newly expanded household.
Usha described the experience of settling into life as a family of six. The family has generally kept many aspects of their children’s lives private despite their public roles.
Historic Birth for U.S. Vice Presidency
The arrival of Alec marked a historic milestone for the office of vice president. No sitting vice president had welcomed a newborn child in more than 150 years, according to historical records.
JD Vance has frequently discussed family and parenthood throughout his political career. The birth underscores how the vice president balances an increasingly public life with the ordinary milestones of raising young children.
