Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot in the neck during a public Q&A event at Utah Valley University on Tuesday.
Kirk was responding to an audience question about mass shootings when gunfire erupted at the campus venue. Witnesses reported screams and chaos as attendees scrambled for exits and took cover.
What Happened
The shooting occurred during an event held under a tent with a sign reading “The American Comeback,” where Kirk was engaged with students and visitors. Video footage showed Kirk collapsing moments after being struck by gunfire.
Authorities said the shooter fired from the Losee Center building, approximately 200 yards away from the event location. An initial suspect was detained but later released as investigators worked to confirm the shooter’s identity.
Security officials noted that the event had no bag checks or metal detector screening in place at the time of the incident.
The Response
Utah Governor Spencer Cox released a statement condemning the killing and vowing to pursue accountability. “This senseless act of violence has no place in our state,” Cox said in remarks to reporters.
Former President Donald Trump called Kirk “great, even legendary,” and expressed sympathy for his family. California Governor Gavin Newsom also issued a statement denouncing the attack and calling for renewed focus on public safety.
