Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that he and other U.S. officials spent roughly 90 minutes aboard Air Force One uncertain whether an unresponsive person in a conference room was sleeping or had died.
Rubio made the disclosure during an appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast while discussing his recent return from China. The incident left officials in an unusual quandary about whether to intervene.
What Happened
The unidentified person remained motionless in the Air Force One conference room despite activity around them, according to Rubio’s account. Officials noted the person did not respond to stimuli and exhibited what Rubio described as a difficult breathing pattern.
“We spent about 90 minutes sort of debating should we make a move?” Rubio said on the podcast. The hesitation stemmed from conflicting concerns: waking someone who was merely in deep sleep could prove embarrassing, but the alternative posed a far graver scenario.
“Because it’s embarrassing if you wake them up,” Rubio explained. “But if they were dead, like what do you do? You have a dead body on the plane.”
Despite the deliberation, no official reportedly summoned the aircraft’s physician or attempted to wake the individual. The situation ultimately resolved without intervention when the person eventually moved.

The Resolution and Reaction
“Luckily, the person was fine,” Rubio said, ending the 90-minute ordeal. He declined to identify the individual, offering no details about who was aboard or the exact date of the flight.
The anecdote quickly generated speculation on social media, with users offering theories about the person’s identity. No evidence has emerged to support any of the names suggested online.
The story gained additional attention given that Rubio had recently faced questioning about sleeping during official duties. Democratic California Representative Ted Lieu asked Rubio during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing whether he had witnessed President Trump fall asleep in meetings.
“I’ve never seen him fall asleep,” Rubio responded at the time. “On the contrary, the guy doesn’t sleep, which is a big problem.” Lieu later challenged that statement, citing video he said showed Trump with his eyes closed during a cabinet meeting.
What This Means
The identity of the Air Force One passenger remains unknown, as does the exact timing of the flight. Rubio appeared to view the episode with humor now that the outcome proved benign.
