Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was fatally shot in the neck during a public event at Utah Valley University on Tuesday.
Kirk was responding to an audience question about mass shootings when gunfire erupted at the campus venue held under a tent displaying a sign reading “The American Comeback.” Witnesses reported screams and chaos as attendees scrambled for exits and sought cover during the incident.
What Happened
The shooter fired from the Losee Center building, approximately 200 yards from the event location, according to authorities. Video footage showed Kirk collapsing moments after being struck by gunfire during his exchange with students and visitors.
Security officials noted the event had no bag checks or metal detector screening in place at the time. An initial suspect was detained but later released as investigators worked to confirm the shooter’s identity.
Official Response
Utah Governor Spencer Cox released a statement condemning the killing and pledging accountability, saying “This senseless act of violence has no place in our state.” Former President Donald Trump called Kirk “great, even legendary,” and expressed sympathy for his family.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also issued a statement denouncing the attack and calling for renewed focus on public safety measures.
Kirk’s Legacy
Kirk leaves behind his wife, Erika Frantzve, and two children. He had built Turning Point USA into a national organization focused on conservative youth activism since founding it years earlier.
The shooting has prompted discussions among lawmakers and university administrators about campus security protocols and prevention of political violence.
